Amazon invests an additional $2.75 billion for Anthropic in the battle for AI leadership

On Mar 27, 2024, Amazon reported that it has invested an additional $2.75 billion in Anthropic, a startup founded by former OpenAI employees that created the Claude language model that has proven to be the most intelligent AI in the market, surpassing GPT-4 and Gemini Advanced.

 

Amazon’s move is a sign that it wants to make Anthropic become leader in AI sector. To win against its competitors including Microsoft and Google.

 

The total investment Amazon has made with Anthropic including the latest round is $4 billion. This is Amazon’s highest investment in startup company.

 

Anthropic will use AWS-developed Trainium and Inferentia chipsets to build, train, and deploy AI models. Amazon will make these AI models available to AWS customers.

 

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is a subsidiary company of Amazon. It is a pay-as-you-go cloud computing provider. Its customers are individuals, companies, and governmental organizations. AWS offers variety of cloud-based products.

However, Amazon isn’t the only investor in Anthropic. Google has also invested in Anthropic. It agreed to invest $2 billion, consist of $500 million cash infusion and another $1.5 billion to be invested over time.

 

Salesforce is another investor in Anthropic.

 

Anthropic is a prominent AI research company. It develops generative AI. The company developed a language model named Claude to create complex AI systems.
