Base launched Basenames that allow users to create human-readable domain names on Base on August 21, 2024.
Basenames are a new feature introduced
by Coinbase’s Layer 2 network, Base, which utilizes the Ethereum Name Service
(ENS) infrastructure to create subnames (.base.eth).
These subnames, called Basenames, allow
users to convert their complex hexadecimal Ethereum addresses into
human-readable names, making it easier for Web3 users to interact with the
blockchain and each other.
Basenames transform Ethereum addresses
into easy-to-remember names (human-readable names).
It integrates with Ethereum Name Service (ENS). Basenames functions through the
ENS infrastructure, which is already used to map Ethereum addresses to .eth
names.
Basenames will be launched via a Dutch
auction, where the price starts high and decreases over time, allowing fair
access to users.
Just like ENS names end with .eth, Basenames’ suffix will end with .base.eth for example bryan.base.eth, jesse.base.eth
ENS domain owners can create an
infinite number of subnames or subdomains for their main ENS name.
Basenames can be thought of as a
decentralized version of the Domain Name System (DNS) used on the internet. It enables
anyone to create identity on Base.
