Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, is reportedly planning a $10 billion subsea internet cable project. This ambitious initiative aims to span 25,000 miles and connect continents, enhancing global internet infrastructure.

The project will be rolled out in phases, with the first segment costing $2 billion and subsequent segments pushing the total cost to over $10 billion.

Owning and operating its cable would give Meta more autonomy and reliability in providing its services.

Currently, Meta shares ownership in over a dozen networks, this would be the first one that it owns and operates entirely.

By circumventing potential single points of failure and avoiding geopolitical hotspots, the cable aims to ensure more robust and uninterrupted connectivity.

With more revenue now coming from international markets, such a cable could support Meta's services in regions with rapidly growing internet usage, especially in Asia and Africa.

Meta's goal is to ensure better data transmission speeds, reliability, and bandwidth for its platforms, which account for a significant share of global internet traffic.

At an estimated 25,000 miles, the cable will avoid geopolitically sensitive areas like the Red Sea and South China Sea, and the Straits of Malacca reducing risks from potential conflicts.
