Pavel Durov, the CEO of Telegram, has
been released from police custody on August 28, 2024 and is set to appear in
court.
Durov must remain in France under
judicial supervision, with a bail set at $5.56 million (5 million euros).
He is required to report to the French
police station twice a week.
He was detained at Le Bourget airport outside
Paris as part of a judicial inquiry involving 12 alleged criminal violations.
The charges relate criminal activity on
Telegram for illicit activities such as drug trafficking and the spread of
child sexual abuse material, illegal gang transactions and refusal to
communicate information to authorities.
French authorities claim that Durov has
refused to share information with investigators, despite legal requirements to
do so.
Durov’s release from custody came after
the maximum 96-hour detention period allowed under French law, and he was
transferred to court on August 28.
The case is still unfolding, and it’s
not yet clear what the outcome will be.
