The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) is an independent agency of the U.S. federal government.

It regulates the country's derivatives markets, which include futures contracts, swaps, and certain types of options.

CFTC’s mission is to promote the integrity, resilience, and vibrancy of these markets through effective regulation as well as protecting investors in the market from fraud, manipulation, and abusive practices

Andreessen Horowitz's a16z crypto division, to lead the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). Quintenz previously served as a CFTC commissioner from 2017 to 2021 during Trump's first term.

In his role at a16z crypto, Quintenz has been a prominent advocate for the cryptocurrency industry, emphasizing the need for clear regulatory frameworks that foster innovation. His potential appointment aligns with the administration's pro-crypto stance and could influence the regulatory digital assets.

The CFTC, which oversees derivatives and commodities markets, could play an important role in cryptocurrency regulation under Quintenz's leadership, especially if Congress expands the agency's authority in this area.
