Matter Labs is the developer of ZKSync’s
blockchains and zkSync Era layer-2 Ethereum scaling solution that launched its
mainnet in March 2023.
On June 10, 2024, ZKSync introduced a new governance system called ZK Nation, which is a community-driven initiative designed to enhance community involvement and ensure a more democratic management of the zkSync protocol.
This move is aligned with zkSync’s
upcoming token generation event and an airdrop, aiming to further decentralize
the network.
The governance structure of ZK Nation
consists of three main on-chain bodies:
Token Assembly
Token holders can propose and vote on
proposals governing the ZKSync protocol.
Security Council
Security Council consists of skilled
engineers, auditors, and cybersecurity professionals that safeguard the ZKsync’s
network technical security.
They provide technical reviews for
protocol upgrades approved by the Token Assembly.
The Security Council has the power to
freeze the ZKsync protocol in response to imminent or active security threats.
At inception, it will consist of 12
leading technical expert members from around the world.
Guardians
They are tasked with protecting the
network’s operational integrity and ensuring the execution of community
decisions.
At inception there will be at least 5
individuals act as guardians. They have power to veto or approve emergency
actions releated to the ZKsync network.
This framework is expected to empower
token holders with the ability to propose, deliberate, and vote on critical
aspects of the network’s development, aligning with zkSync’s mission to
maintain a decentralized and user-driven network.
The collaboration with Tally, a popular
delegation and voting portal, will facilitate these interactions, allowing
token holders to engage in governance through a familiar and user-friendly
platform.
