The measure to use Optimism's OP Stack technology for migrating the current standalone blockchain of the Celo community to a layer-2 network on Ethereum was approved with overwhelming support.
The vote, which was proposed on May 3, received approval from 65 addresses representing 14.6 million CELO tokens, with two addresses abstaining with 20,484 CELO.
Given the magnitude of this decision, which is considered an existential transformation, Celo community leaders have emphasized that the change will not happen automatically.
Instead, it will only occur once upgrades from the validators are completed.
The recent vote can be seen as a "temperature check" following last month's announcement by cLabs, the primary developer firm behind the Celo blockchain, proposing the OP Stack as the primary technology for the network.
The selection process involved evaluating various customizable stacks from different layer-2 teams, turning it into a public and closely-watched competition.
Celo initially announced its plans to utilize the OP Stack technology in July of last year, intending to become a layer-2 chain within the broader Ethereum ecosystem.
However, the transition became competitive when other solutions like Arbitrum Orbit, zkSync's ZK Stack, and Polygon CDK entered the picture.
After careful consideration, the Celo team decided to stick with their original choice, stating that the OP Stack provides what is needed to deploy a layer-2 solution with minimal changes and is compatible with other stacks.
It's important to note that Celo's transformation into a layer 2 on top of Ethereum will only be finalized once the blockchain's validators have completed the necessary upgrades.
