Optimism, a provider of Ethereum scaling solutions, is focused on improving the efficiency of its blockchain by integrating layer-3 applications onto the OP Stack.

In a recent announcement, the Optimism team invited layer-3 projects to join the Superchain, offering them the opportunity to build on the OP Stack and collaborate with the Optimism Collective, ultimately sharing revenue.

The OP Stack serves as the foundational codebase that powers development on the Superchain.

Importantly, it is not limited to L2 chain deployers and app builders, but can also be utilized by a diverse ecosystem of layer-3 projects.

The Optimism Superchain consists of a network of layer-2 chains called OP Chains, which leverage shared security, communication layers, and open-source technology.

By becoming layer-3 participants in the Superchain, developers gain access to numerous advantages, including eligibility for retro funding, airdrops, and developer grant programs.

However, certain limitations may apply, particularly in terms of interoperability.

Layer-3 protocols are built on top of layer-2 networks to facilitate the creation of decentralized applications tailored to specific use cases.

They provide solutions for scaling, performance, interoperability, customization, and cost-effectiveness.

To support layer-3 builders, the OP Stack will introduce two key features: custom gas tokens and "Plasma Mode." Custom gas tokens enable the use of a layer-2 token as the native gas token for a layer-3 protocol, reducing the costs associated with onboarding.

Plasma Mode serves as an alternative to the data availability layer, minimizing the fixed overhead cost of operating a layer-3 network compared to a layer-2 network.

The primary goal is to enhance the accessibility of the Optimism Superchain for developers by offering layer-3 features and functionality.

However, there are differing opinion within the Ethereum community regarding the necessity and potential security risks associated with layer-3 networks.

Some argued that layer-2 networks provide greater benefits, as they allow for frequent and rapid settlements back to Ethereum.

Despite the ongoing debate, Optimism's Rollup-based OP Mainnet stands as the second-largest layer-2 network, with a total value locked of $6.76 billion and a market share of approximately 18%, according to L2beat.
