According to Reuters OpenAI is preparing to launch a cutting-edge AI-driven search engine in an effort to challenge Google's dominant position in the search market.

This upcoming product, supported by Microsoft, utilizes OpenAI's flagship ChatGPT technology to provide web-based information along with proper citations.

The timing of this announcement, just before Google's annual I/O conference, seems strategic, considering that Google is expected to unveil new AI-powered features during the event.

The new search tool significantly expands the capabilities of ChatGPT, enabling it to retrieve real-time and directly cited information from the internet.

This addresses previous limitations in terms of accuracy and up-to-dateness.

OpenAI's integration of ChatGPT with Microsoft Bing for premium users, as well as Google's recent incorporation of generative AI into its search engine, have paved the way for this initiative.

Despite experiencing fluctuations in web traffic, ChatGPT has already achieved remarkable user engagement, and OpenAI aims to enhance this further with their new offering.

Meanwhile, Perplexity, a startup led by a former OpenAI researcher, has also made noteworthy progress in the AI search field.

Valued at $1 billion, Perplexity has developed a user-friendly AI search interface that includes citations and multimedia in its search results, attracting a substantial user base of over 10 million monthly active users.

OpenAI's decision to enter the competitive search market highlights the escalating rivalry in the AI sector and the industry's rapid evolution towards more sophisticated and interactive AI solutions.
